Black History and Cultural Capital “Heritage, in essence is the means by which people have used their talents to create a history that gives them memories they can respect and that they can use to command the respect of other people. The ultimate purpose of heritage and heritage teaching is to use people's talents to develop awareness and pride in themselves so that they themselves can achieve good relationships with other people." - Dr. John Henrik Clarke The creativity and ingenuity of Africans and African-Americans have helped to shape the world in which we live. What is often lost in the recitation of those contributions is how cultural capital (values, preferences, skills, and habits) encouraged extraordinary levels of achievement even in the midst of difficult circumstances. From Imhotep to Obama, we have a legacy of excellence without excuses. This interactive workshop explores our history through the context of our significant cultural capital and how leveraging it will determine the state of our communities in the 21st century. Scope:
